We congratulate her on winning a position at Kedgley Intermediate School. We wish her all the best for the future.
Mrs Lesieli Seaton: Lesieli also came to us directly from university, Southland University in Invercargill. Greetings to all of our school community
We started the year with 690 students, the lowest number for a very long time. This is due to the reduction in the numbers of out-of-zone enrolments and a demographic dip. The reduction in out-of-zone enrolments will continue. However, the roll in 2019 will again start to rise. We already expect 720 students at the start of 2019.
- At the start of 2018, we moved back to ‘composite classes’ (with Year 7 and 8 students in the same classes). Papatoetoe Intermediate School had composite classes prior to 2006. The move back, is to support students through the transitions and to enable closer whanau and teacher relationships over the two years students attend our school. Students and teachers alike report their preference, now, for the new classroom make-up.
- March saw the audited accounts for the first time in many years, with a positive working capital and no areas of concern.
- The Principal was on Sabbatical Study Leave during Term 2 allowing for Assistant Principals to experience, for a short period, the responsibilities of leading our school.
- In June, a Board of Trustees was re-instated with four members being appointed by the Ministry and three elected by the community. The previous Commissioner, Chris Saunders remains supporting the school as a ‘Statutory Advisor’.
- We participated in the usual school events with increasing successes, e.g. Papatoetoe’s Got Talent, Tironui Trust Concert, Papatoetoe Art Exhibition, Music Showcase, APPA Choir Festival, AIMs Art Exhibition etc.
- 416 students participated in 28 teams who competed in inter-zone sports competitions. A further 116 students participated in ‘friendly’ school sports exchanges with Lincoln Heights, Mt Richmond Special School, Kedgley and Ferguson Intermediate Schools. We are pleased to have reached the Auckland finals for Chess, Tag, Netball, Softball, Football, and Hockey and had seven students qualify for the Auckland Intermediate Athletics finals.
- The focus this year has been developing student leadership with the goal of ‘every Year 8 student a leader’. We have participated in Leadership Programmes for the 10 student House Group Leaders with the support of William Buck Accounting. This will continue in 2019. We have also run on-going mentoring programmes for many of the leadership groups and the Refined Brothers and Sisters Projects continues with great success. About 35 student leaders participated in the Student Leaders Big Day Out, which celebrates outstanding leadership over the course of the year.
- Our school is pleased to have Jeff Takura supporting us as Kaumatua. The development of the Kapa Haka Group over 2018 has seen them raise about $7500 to attend Koroneihana in June and the Regional Competition in November. Young leaders from this group were acknowledged in the Kapa Haka Regional competition with one coming 10th for her performance. The school’s performance overall was and outstanding 14th. We were also strongly supported by the Papatoetoe High School Kapa Haka tutors and students a relationship we hope to foster and build in coming years.
- Over 2018 we have at last started to see the projects for the improvement of the school property and facility started. The first of these is the re-building of the Technology Suite (Foods, Hard and Soft Materials and Visual Arts). In December, over the school holidays, the old Music Suite and School Hall is to be demolished. In 2019, a new Performing Arts Room is to be added to the Gymnasium and a new Music Suite installed where the Foods Room is currently.
- During the year, due to Innes Jephson, Assistant Principal leaving to take up a position in the MOE Wellington we reviewed the leadership structures. As a result, the following Leadership roles were will be in place for the start of 2019.
