Our school library is very well resourced. It has over 10 000 books including junior novels, graphic novels, non-fiction, books in languages other than English and in Te Reo Maori. There is an ICT suite and two staff members who have both librarianship and teaching qualifications. It opens before school at 8am, during morning tea and lunchtime. On three nights opening is extended until 5pm for a Study Centre run by Ms Schutt. Year 7 students can borrow seven books at a time and Year 8s eight books. The loan period is two weeks. There are no fines for overdue books, but lost or damaged books will need to be paid for.
As part of their learning students are expected to practise their sustained reading skills by always having a chapter book on loan which they are reading all the way through. They are also encouraged to borrow at least one non-fiction and one picture book.
Students all have their own library number which they can use via the online catalogue to check what they have on issue, their loan history, to reserve books and write reviews.
