Illegal drugs have no place in any school. This policy sets out the school’s approach to handling problems presented by people who decide to break the law. Drugs, including so-called “soft drugs” like marijuana and alcohol, endanger health and safety as well as impairing ability to learn.

All stand downs and suspensions must carefully follow the rules of natural justice. The most difficult aspect of this proves is that the perpetrator of an action is innocent until the evidence proves otherwise. In the heat of an event, with emotions running strongly, this is easy to loose sight of.

Rationale

From time to time it may be necessary to stand down or suspend a student from school if that student’s behaviour is deemed to present a danger to him/herself or to other students or if that behaviour constitutes gross misconduct or repeatedly unacceptable behaviour.
