Papatoetoe Intermediate school employs a school counsellor to provide support for staff, students and their families, and to co-ordinate pastoral care committee.
The Role of the Counsellor
The Counsellor assists Papatoetoe Intermediate School with achieving the best possible learning environments for students through providing the oversight of an effective pastoral care programme.
Responsibility
- Support and guidance for staff and students in general counselling responsibilities
- Co-ordinating adolescent development Programmes
- Active participation in weekly and monthly pastoral care meetings
Support for Students & Teachers
- Co-ordinating and /or Active participation in Restorative Meetings working inclusively with classroom teachers, using the ecological approaches
- Counselling and / or distant monitoring of identified students
- Liaison with relevant agencies
- Supporting individual contracts
- Plan and implement skill based programmes for students requiring extra support
- Structuring support systems for academic, social / emotional success
- Organising meetings / discussions for staff on special topics related to specific needs of students
- Follow up transitions
- Practical suggestions for teachers / school staff
- Provision of observations of children or teachers or programmes Provide re-assurance and support for parents /caregivers / families / Whanau
