The school has a uniform which students are expected to wear correctly and a dress code that students are expected to support. Parents enrolling their children at this school do so knowing that correct uniform and adherence to the dress code is a requirement of attendance. The school does not prohibit specific items - it is enough to specify what is, in fact, school uniform.
Our uniform is a year round uniform with the exception of the girls’ shorts [summer only] and tracksuit pants [winter only]. Most items are uni-sex and so may be worn by boys or girls. We change from summer uniform into winter at Queen's birthday weekend (Jen) and then back into summer uniform at Labour Weekend (October).

Dress Code
Papatoetoe Intermediate has a school uniform which we expect students to wear with pride whenever they are in it. We expect that the uniform will be kept clean, tidy and in good repair. We expect it to be worn without variation and modifications. The school reserves the right to prohibit footwear and clothing considered unacceptable.
During emergencies, when the school uniform may not be available, a temporary exemption card may be obtained from the Deputy Principal or an Associate Principal by a parental note explaining the reason for the situation.
We expect every item of clothing to be named clearly so that lost property can be returned to the correct owner. The school will take no responsibility for lost or stolen uniforms unless the items were left in our care for safe keeping.
We expect that sports and physical education uniforms will be brought to school and worn at the right time. Sports shoes may only be worn with sports uniform. Sports gear is not worn home. Students must travel home in their proper school uniform.
Jewellery and ornaments will not be worn. This includes ear-rings, nose studs, signet rings, bracelets etc. Students with pierced ears may wear one plain stud in each ear lobe. The only part of the body normally visible in school activities that this school will accept may be pierced is the single piercing in the ear. This standard is common across local intermediates AND secondary schools. Loss or injury is the responsibility of students/parents/caregivers. Jewellery that has a particular religious or ethnic significance may be worn after written permission has been sought and approved by a member of the management team. This also applies to manaia. For safety reasons such approved items must be worn unseen. All such items are worn at the owner’s risk.
We expect students to come to school in a clean, well-groomed condition with nails trimmed for safety reasons. Cosmetics, including nail varnish, are not to be worn. Students are not to “decorate” their skin.
Hair should be of a style that is appropriate and acceptable to the school. Long hair is dangerous in the technology rooms and must be tied back. Hair is to remain natural in colour. Hair ties must be peacock, maroon, gold, black or navy blue and must be practical rather than decorative.
Ignorance of this Dress Code is no excuse. Parents and children are expected to have read it.
