The targets set are derived from the school based data from STAR testing in November for both year groups. Year 6 data was supplied by some contributing schools. Students who were not tested then, will be tested in March this year.
Year 8 students who are new to this school will also be tested in March.
To identify students who have a STAR stanine of 1 to 4, which will indicate that they have a critical level in one of the six areas identified in STAR testing i.e. word recognition, sentence comprehension, paragraph comprehension, vocabulary range, language of advertising or writing style.
All Year 7 and Year 8 students will be required to increase their existing stanines by at least two stanine levels except those who are already at stanine 7 to 9.
This will be achieved by classroom teachers and the literacy leader monitoring their progress as the target group.
From this group we will also be able to track the progress of Maori and Pacific Island students.
Students who have a stanine of 1 or 2 and who are not new learners of English may not be able to meet this target as they may have critical scores in all six areas. Their target will be to focus on comprehension and vocabulary to lift their scores in these two areas, out of the critical range.
